Learn to fly RC with a $50 investment ($25 for youth)

QuickSTART your RC experience with the best way to learn: the SLRCFA QuickSTART membership.


  • You don't need to purchase a radio or airplane - learn to fly with SLRCFA trainer aircraft
  • You are assigned an experienced RC pilot to show you the ropes - your QuickSTART Mentor.
  • You'll learn how to fly, but you'll also learn important concepts to enjoy the hobby and fly safely (without crashing), like:
    • Inspecting a new plane before flight
    • Trimming an airplane to fly straight and level
    • Recognizing the attitude and heading of the plane from every angle
    • What to do when things go wrong - how not to panic!

How it works…

  • Mentor - you will be assigned a MENTOR immediately upon verification of membership.
  • Contact & Scheduling: You'll have your mentor's contact info and can schedule time to meet at the field. However, most QuickSTARTs typically meet on Tuesday nights after work for winter simulator flying, and for flying at the field when the weather is tolerable (usually by late Feb or March).
  • Winter "flying" - QuickSTART members meet on various Tuesday nights for simulator flights and ground school on a big screen.
  • Spring, Summer, Fall flying Quick Start training on SLRCFA aircraft with your Mentor at SLRCFA field (when it's warmer) on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 4:30 p.m. until dark
  • Length of membership:
    • Adults - six months from date of activation - If you choose to renew, your entire membership fee will be credited towards a FULL or PRIME membership!
    • Youth (23 and under) - one year renewable on Jan 1.

  • Dues:
    • Adults $50 for six months from date of activation! (normally $195) - If you choose to renew, your entire membership fee will be credited towards a FULL or PRIME membership.
    • Youth under 24 years of age, $25 per year (JUNIOR membership), renews Jan 1 each year.
  • Requirements
    • QuickSTART members may not have been an SLRCFA Member for the last five years.
    • You will fly with your QuickSTART mentor on a "buddy box" - allowing them to take over the plane if you get in trouble - until you solo. We'll celebrate big-time when you do! We want to see you flying!
    • You'll need to have AMA membership. Click here for their 90 day special "try it out" offer. As an AMA charter field, all pilots and guest pilots must be insured by AMA to fly at SLRCFA.
    • When you "Signup" below, you'll need to agree to SLRCFA's Rules & Safety.
